It works by preventing platelets from sticking together, thus reducing the risk of harmful clot formation in arteries supplying the heart, brain, and other parts of the body.
Commonly prescribed for patients after angioplasty, stent placement, acute coronary syndromes, myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, or those with peripheral arterial disease.
The medication is taken orally, usually once daily, and should be taken at the same time each day as prescribed by the doctor.
Patients need to inform physicians of any bleeding disorders, recent strokes, or severe liver problems before use.
Regular blood tests may be required to monitor clotting time during therapy.
